We are determined to make 2021 a better year than the last. With that in mind, we dropped our Season 6 premiere of otipêyimisiw-iskwêwak kihci-kîsikohk, Métis in Space (yay!!!!). Even more exciting however, is the launch of:
otipêyimisiw-iskwêwak kihci-kîsikohk otôtêma pîkiskwêyiwa: MÉTIS IN SPACE THEATRE PRESENTS, PRESENTS, PRESENTS, PRESENTS, PRESENTS…
We have lined up five incredible Indigenous creators, each of whom have chosen a television show or movie to review à la Métis in Space, and we will be releasing episodes periodically.
We firmly believe that Indigenous creators need to be paid, and paid well. In lieu of on-the-land activities that this cursed pandemic have put the kibosh on, we came up with Métis in Space Theatre Presents to continue that important practice of kiyokêwin (visiting), albeit virtually. We dipped into the Métis in Space Land Trust monies to ensure all creators are compensated. If you would like to help make sure these kinds of collaborations continue to be possible, please e-transfer whatever you can manage to mislandtrust[at]gmail.com.
First up is an episode by this awesome human-being, Tara McGowan-Ross, an urban Mi’kmaq multidisciplinary artist. She is the author of the poetry collections Girth and Scorpion Season. She lives in Tio’tià:ke (Montreal), where she is the host of Drawn and Quarterly’s Indigenous Literatures Book Club, and is a critic of independent and experimental theatre. Her debut collection of nonfiction, Nothing Will Be Different, is forthcoming in the fall of 2021 with Dundurn Press. You can also find her on Twitter @girthgirl.
Tara chose to cover Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit, “a World War II satire that follows a lonely German boy named Jojo whose world view is turned upside down when he discovers his single mother is hiding a young Jewish girl in their attic.”
With new intro music by Jake Swain, we proudly offer to you our first installment of Métis in Space Theatre Presents: Tara McGowan-Ross!
